Jesus and Mary are a couple going through a rough patch in their relationship. However, they have just become parents. In order to shape their new life, they decide to buy a new coffee table. A decision that will change their existence. The entire film was shot over the course of 10 days. Salesman: The glass is unbreakable, so your table will last forever. Jesus and Mary don’t start out in a manger, but in a furniture store, where a domineering salesman works tirelessly to sell them a coffee table. The gruesome set piece includes “fake gold,” nude female figures, and what the man describes as “unbreakable” glass. The new mother is a little anxious about giving birth, and the couple seems to be going through a rough patch in their marriage. The first ten minutes could be described as a comedy, but halfway through the film, things take a dark turn. Jesus needs to assemble the coffee table and an accident brings his world crashing down, and the final act is as well done as anything I’ve ever seen. Ten days of filming is a miracle these days, and the script is tight and clever. Don’t miss The Coffee Table. A solid 9/10. Don’t miss this gem.
