In the collapsing Soviet Union, the Petrosyan family feels marginalized wherever they go. Their Armenian background makes them targets of discrimination, first in their native Azerbaijan, and then in Russia. After finding their eternal hope through a church founded by American missionaries, the hostility of everyday life forces them to seek refuge in the United States.
